Thecla first laid her hands on sculpting about 17 years ago when she started taking lessons with two of
her friends. These few lessons turned into 10 years of studying the art of creating shapes, curves and forms.
In September 1998, Thecla, her husband Herman, and their four children immigrated to Canada from Holland. Here
she found space, adventure, inspiration for her sculpting and a good future for her children. In keeping with
their artisan background, Thecla and Herman started a new business, The Dutch Hill, offering carpentry,
sculpting and other creative services.
Last year, Thecla discovered a new art medium from Holland called Paverpol. This textile hardener is an
environmentally friendly fluid used to make fabric rock hard. It is weather-proof and frost-proof. Perfect for
artists and hobbyists!
Thecla’s new medium allows her complete freedom of expression to create wonderfully graceful garden statues
that are draped in flowing fabric, and have an individuality and presence all their own. As Paverpol dries
quickly, you can make a statue in one day. Painted and all!
Thecla and Herman are certified teachers and offer workshops at the Dutch Hill studio. The workshops are an
outlet for participants to learn Paverpol and express their creative side by creating their own garden statue.
The Dutch Hill is also Paverpol distributors. Paverpol products are available at their store in Spencerville
or can be ordered online.
